Our at-home activities to help build your child’s motor skills

Motor skills support the movement of muscles and the tasks we complete every day, which is why frequent practice with fun motor skills activities is essential to help build a child’s physical strength, movement, exploration, gross and fine motor skills, and independence.

Motor development in early childhood can be fun for your child and there is a range of activities that can be completed at home.

In our latest blog, Rashika Singh, Occupational Therapist at our Wellbeing Centre in Abu Dhabi, shares tips for parents to enhance motor skills in infants and develop their child’s independence skills by helping them learn to dress themselves – the activities are great fun too!

Motor skills activities to do with your child

Enhance your child’s motor skills to increase their eye and hand coordination and motor development. These fun and simple fine motor skills activities will help your little ones with sensory development and motor coordination.

The felt snake

Attach a button to the end of a shoelace, then cut holes in pieces of fabric or felt. Your child can then thread the fabric over the button onto the shoelace. This helps to strengthen their bilateral coordination which supports tying shoelaces and fastening buttons.

The pull-over

Turn an old t-shirt into a cape by cutting off the arms and back. This will support your child in putting clothes over their head, improving their motor skills of dressing themselves.
