Priory Wellbeing Centre in Dubai will be running a CME accredited evening lecture on “21st Century Psychiatry”, presented by Dr Walid Abdul-Hamid, Medical Director, MBChb,MRCPsych, PhD, EMDR Europe Consultant, Supervisor and Trainer in training.
What is "21st Century Psychiatry"?
‘After severe trauma, the world is experienced with a different nervous system. The survivor’s energy becomes focused on suppressing inner chaos, at the expense of their involvement in their own life’. Also, for many people the war begins at home: Each year about three million children in the United States are reported as victims of child abuse and neglect in what is known as ‘Complex Trauma’ according to van der Kolk, ‘for every US soldier who serves in a war zone abroad, there are ten children who are endangered in their own homes’. The ACE study showed that childhood trauma can result; not only in severe psychiatric disorders, but also severe and deadly physical disorders.
Trauma psychiatry comes with the promise of treating the cause of psychiatric disorders instead of merely their symptoms. The new development in the American Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition in 2013 listed for the first time, trauma disorders like PTSD under the category of separate section of Trauma and Extreme Stress which is constituted as a shift in psychiatric nosology from symptoms-based classification into etiological classification that will enable a more effective management and treatment for psychiatric disorders. The relatively new psychotherapy of EMDR that works by tackling the trauma that causes psychiatric disorders, has been considered a revolution in Public mental health parallel to that of penicillin, polio vaccination and oral rehydration in physical medicine."
